Phase 1: Relief Care
Thumbs Up to Relief
Many people go to a chiropractor because they are in pain. In this first phase of care, the main goal is to reduce your symptoms. Sometimes this will require daily visits, or two to three visits per week for a time.
Most people are under the assumption that if they don’t feel any pain that there is nothing wrong with them – that they are healthy. Unfortunately, pain is a very poor indicator of health. In fact, pain and other symptoms frequently only appear after a disease or other condition has become advanced.
For example, consider a cavity in your tooth. Does it hurt when it first develops or only after it has become serious? How about heart disease? Regardless of whether you are talking about cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stress or problems with the spine, pain is usually the last thing to appear. When you begin chiropractic care, pain is also the first symptom to disappear, even though much of the underlying condition remains. Ask about preventive care as your acute symptoms improve!
What kind of treatment can I expect?
Acute care is structured based on the diagnosis to provide the fastest relief possible. During acute care you may expect physical therapy modalities such as:
Paraffin Bath Wax – heat therapy for extremities like hands and feet that are tough to heat.
Moist Heat Packs – moist heat penetrates the skin deeper providing more relief to sore areas and tight muscles
Cryotherapy – Ice cold compresses applied to reduce acute inflammation
Electric Stimulation – Different setting allow us to help break up pain, reconnect muscles to the brain, and decrease spasm as well.
Ultrasound – Ultrasonic waves can deliver heat therapy to bone, joint, muscular, and ligamentous tissues to help relieve pain and inflammation without you even feeling it. Also great for trigger points in muscles!
Cervical Traction Machine – Our cervical traction machine applies gentle direct axial traction to the cervical and upper thoracic spine. This is excellent for those in pain from disc herniations with radiating pain down the arms. Also great for chronic symptoms and even sometimes carpal tunnel!
Lumbar Flexion and Distraction – Our Flexion/Distraction table will help relieve most causes of low back pain by first gently distracting your lumbar spine and allowing the joints and discs to decompress, and secondarily will allow the doctor to maneuver your lower half from side to side as your spine flexes to ease movement into compresses, inflamed, and painful joints. Great for sciatica!
Massage Therapy – Our therapists are trained in acute care and can perform trigger point therapy massage as well as reflexology to help ease the strain on your body. Lymphatic drainage massage may also be used for any local swelling due to injury.
Nutritional Supplementation – Our doctors may administer anti-inflammatory nutrients or enzymes to help reduce inflammation and help your body heal faster. High doses of concentrated omega 3 fatty acids have been proven to reduce inflammation and pain.
